New Zealand Rugby is celebrating recognition for another rugby leader in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list announced today – All Blacks Manager Darren Shand has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Steve Tew congratulated Shand on the accolade saying it was fantastic recognition for someone who had been an integral part of the All Blacks success since his appointment in 2004.

“We’re delighted for Shandy and his family. This is a great acknowledgement of the huge contribution he has made, and continues to make, to the All Blacks and New Zealand Rugby.

“Shandy has been an incredibly successful and quiet achiever over a long period of time and he deserves this award.

“While he has been a key figure in the All Blacks’ management team for a decade now, Shandy has always advocated strongly for the All Blacks to be engaged with the community and to connect with fans.”

Darren has served as the All Blacks Manager since 2004 and during that time has been a crucial part of a team overseeing many notable achievement including the 2011 Rugby World Cup–winning campaign.

With the 2011 Rugby World Cup the pinnacle achievement for the All Blacks during Shand’s tenure, in his time the All Blacks also won the Tri Nations five times as well as the inaugural Rugby Championship in 2012 and 2013.

The All Blacks won two Grand Slams against the Home Nations in 2005 and 2008 and were named IRB Team of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

The rugby achievement in 2013 featured the history-making 14-game unbeaten season.

Under his management and working with first Head Coach Sir Graham Henry and now Steve Hansen he has seen almost 100 All Blacks make their debut.

Prior to joining the All Blacks, Shand was Crusaders Manager for four years, during which time the team made every Super Rugby final and won the competition twice. He served as manager of the Canterbury Air New Zealand NPC side from 1999-2003 and also managed New Zealand A during their tour of France, Wales and Romania in 2000.
