Most New Zealand club rugby competitions for 2015 were underway on Saturday, with some playing their first rounds and others such as Waikato and Counties Manukau and Bay Of Plenty in full swing.

Waikato, Counties Manukau and BoP have now completed three full rounds of Premier club rugby, having started on 14 March, while other notable competitions to start up on Saturday included Taranaki, Canterbury Metro, Hawke’s Bay and North Harbour.

In Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay the defending champions were both beaten in their season openers.

2014 Taranaki winners Inglewood were humbled at home 47-16 by Tukapa, while New Plymouth Old Boys, Coastal and Stratford opened the new season with wins.

In Hawke’s Bay, defending championship winners Havelock North were tipped over 21-18 by MAC. MAC lead 10-8 at halftime.

Clive, Taradale and Hastings Rugby & Sports all started with bonus point wins, defending first round Nash champions Taradale defeating Napier Tech 32-22, Hastings beating Central 34-29 and Clive over-running Tamatea 46-17.

In North Harbour, last year’s top qualifiers Massey, the Western Pioneers and Mahurangi all opened their seasons with bonus point wins. Massey beat Northcote 36-0, the Western Pioneers overcame Takapuna 46-3 and Mahurangi, who won just once last year in the top division, defeated Glenfield 25-8.

Papatoetoe won Auckland’s pre-season Waka Nathan Cup with a 31-7 win over Waitemata. Papatoetoe last won this trophy in 2012, while in the last five years at least, no team has won the Waka Nathan Cup and gone on and won the championship Gallaher Shield.

The first week of a tweaked Auckland first round competition, featuring Blue and White pools, kicks off on 11 April.

In Wellington, Defending first round Swindale Shield champions Marist St Pat’s, defending Jubilee Cup championship winners Hutt Old Boys Marist and 2013 powerhouses Tawa are the three clubs with two wins from two. MSP beat Avalon 30-15, HOBM defeated Norths 25-7 and Tawa rallied late to beat Ories 23-18.
