New Zealand club rugby round-up 9 May

Winter’s just around the corner, but many club rugby competitions around New Zealand were played in wall-to-wall sunshine on Saturday and many teams shone brightly.

In a top-of-the-table clash in Auckland’s Blue Pool, Pakuranga and University battled to a 6-6 draw. But there was plenty of hot scoring elsewhere in the Auckland region. The Western Pioneers put 100 points on Marist to leave them, Massey – who lost their first game of the season, to mid-table North Shore – in a three-way tie with two weekends to go before the mid-point of the season.

In Northland, leaders Wellsford sauntered to their sixth straight win, beating the Western Sharks by 40 points, while Mid Northern retained second place with their fifth win 33-22 over Waipu.

Karaka (39 points) holds a two point lead at the top of the standings to both Pukekohe and Ardmore Marist (37) after nine rounds in the Counties Manukau Challenge Cup competition. Karaka edged Pukekohe 31-24 in the match of the afternoon.

The Hamilton Marist Ravens hold court at the top of the table in Waikato Premier club rugby after 10 rounds, beating Hamilton Marist 45-33. Taradale remain unbeaten after seven rounds of the Hawke’s Bay Nash Cup competition and at the top of the table – but just. Taradale saw off a stern challenge from MAC, winning 21-20. Napier Pirates are second, beating Central 29-21, ahead of third placed Napier Old Boys Marist who pipped Napier Technical 22-18 in another tight affair.

Over in Taranaki, New Plymouth Old Boys took a firm grip on the top of the standings at the halfway point of the round-robin competition, beating town rivals Spotswood 25-15. Defending champions Inglewood grasped second with a 41-17 win over Clifton, while Tukapa leap frogged Coastal with a 46-19 victory. Stratford remains anchored at the bottom, losing 14-41 to Southern.

The first round Jubilee Cup in Manawatu concluded, with College Old Boys collecting the silverware after wrapping it up last week. COB had the bye this week. In other noted games, Kia Toa scored 23 unanswered points in the second half to beat Varsity 37-9 to clinch second, Old Boys Marist edged Feilding Old Boys Oroua 21-20.
