Mid Canterbury gained a jump on the field with a 25-17 win over King Country in Ashburton on Saturday.

With closest rivals North Otago and Poverty Bay suffering losses, it left Wairarapa Bush and Wanganui at the head of the chasing bunch.

Mid Canterbury are on 13 points after three games while Wanganui moved to second with a thumping 40-10 away win over North Otago, the previous second-placed side. Conditions were so windy in Oamaru that all of Wanganui’s 40 points came from tries.

Wairarapa Bush travelled to Westport and beat the home team 14-13 in a thriller. Sadly for Buller stalwart Phil Beveridge he wasn’t able to celebrate his 150th game for the Union with a win.

Other sides to claim big wins were Thames Valley, who beat East Coast 50-13 while Horowhenua Kapiti beat Poverty Bay 54-26. Horowhenua Kapiti Brandyn Laursen had a great day scoring 29 points, equalling JPM Hamilton’s record set against the West Coast in 2010.
