{"id":10331,"date":"2020-01-26T21:40:52","date_gmt":"2020-01-26T08:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rugbyheartland.co.nz\/wp\/?p=10331"},"modified":"2020-01-27T09:25:09","modified_gmt":"2020-01-26T20:25:09","slug":"hsbc-new-zealand-sevens-celebrates-21st-year-as-home-teams-grab-historic-double","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rugbyheartland.co.nz\/wp\/2020\/01\/26\/hsbc-new-zealand-sevens-celebrates-21st-year-as-home-teams-grab-historic-double\/","title":{"rendered":"HSBC New Zealand Sevens celebrates 21st year as home teams grab historic double"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Black Ferns Sevens win first women&#8217;s world series title on home soil<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>All Blacks Sevens break Hamilton drought on third attempt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Crowd of nearly 20,000 celebrates finals day\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-38854 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rugbyredefined.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/83938949_2978618472169733_4872616916725792768_n.jpg?resize=233%2C233&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"233\" \/>New Zealand Sevens fans got the perfect 21st birthday gift as the All Blacks Sevens and Black Ferns Sevens won their respective men\u2019s and women\u2019s titles at the 2020 HSBC New Zealand Sevens in Hamilton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The home team\u2019s dual-titles capped a thrilling weekend on Saturday that saw a costume-wearing crowd of nearly 20,000 enjoy the rugby and the party at FMG Stadium Waikato in equal doses as the mercury tipped 30 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The Black Ferns ran away with an historic first 2020 HSBC New Zealand Sevens women\u2019s trophy by overcoming Canada 24-7 in the Cup final, while the All Blacks Sevens beat France 27-5 to lift the Cup in Hamilton for the first time in three tries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">HSBC New Zealand Sevens General Manager Steve Dunbar said the intensity of the respective finals had been a fitting finale for the tournament\u2019s 21<sup>st<\/sup> edition on 25-26 January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u201cWe had 18,000 on Saturday, and nearly 20,000 on Sunday, near-perfect weather and two extremely popular champions who had to really fight hard for their titles, so we couldn\u2019t have asked for much more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The tournament had been bigger than ever with the addition of a 12-team women draw marking the first fully integrated men\u2019s and women\u2019s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament on New Zealand soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u201cWe are proud of the fact we\u2019ve made history for women\u2019s rugby and when you consider we\u2019ve attracted sell-out crowds in 2018 and 2019 we are pretty pleased overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u201cNext year another New Zealand venue will host the event and I think everyone would agree Hamilton has set a very high bar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-38851 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rugbyredefined.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/82909220_2978619632169617_5242984251741175808_n.png?resize=253%2C253&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"253\" \/>37 South Managing Director and co-promoter Dallas Fisher said the past three years had showed the value of catering to a wide variety of event goers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u201cWhat a fitting way to cap off three incredibly successful events in Hamilton.
