5 Tips for Rugby Beginners

    1. Research the game

Whilst it may be tempting to get stuck in, you should never run out onto the pitch unless you are equipped with protective clothing and padding. This is especially important for players of contact rugby. At the very least, sensitive body parts, such as the ears, legs, and neck, should be sufficiently protected. This can be done by wearing a lightweight jersey with built-in removable pads, forearm guards, bicep guards, calf and Achilles’ protectors, headgear, and mouthguards. Whilst rugby equipment may top your list of priorities as a rugby beginner, protective gear is a must.

    1. Practice catching

If you can train with a friend or family member, practicing your catching can allow you to grow and develop as a player. For example, by sourcing a large, open space, you can practice catching whilst your partner practices kicking and vice versa. If you have the time and resources to do so, it may benefit you to also practice a variety of short and long passes. If you are struggling with your throwing, try spinning the ball before passing it to your partner. This is not only easier and quicker to master for the vast majority of up-and-coming players but can also allow you to cover greater distance.

    1. Choose the right position

Before you take up rugby, you must choose a position that plays to your unique strengths. Whether you possess a great deal of speed, stamina, or strength, there is guaranteed to be a position out there to suit you. Players that are particularly gifted when it comes to running, for example, are likely to be great wings. Players that are good with their hands are suited to either full-backs or scrum-halves. Finally, players that are proficient at kicking should seek out stand-off positions and strong players with relatively high levels of stamina, energy, and endurance should pursue a forward role. As a rugby beginner, it can take time to uncover your strengths and weaknesses. By doing so, however, you can ensure you are not only contributing to the success of your team as a whole but developing as a player.

    1. Experiment with different forms of the game

As well as standard contact rugby, it may benefit you to experiment with a number of non-contact forms of the game such as tag rugby, touch football, and flag rugby. If you are nervous at the thought of contact rugby, these variations can be a great way to ease you in.
