EARLY HISTORY AND GROWTH OF CLUBS 1892-1921
Prior to 1892 there is no record of any rugby activity within the region now
recognised as the East Coast RU. To the south rugby arrived in Gisborne in
1878 and the Poverty Bay Union was formed in 1890. In 1892 a team was
formed at Waipiro Bay and travelled down to Gisborne the next year to play
Gisborne Club and in 1894 were affiliated with Poverty Bay as a country
club. In May 1897 the Tolaga Bay Club was formed.
