Poverty Bay, courtesy of a 17-9 win over Thames Valley moved into second place and is assured of a place in the Meads Cup play-offs with Buller.
Horowhenua Kapiti helped their chance of also qualifying by beating South Canterbury 23-11 but faces a tough opponent in the last round when travelling to Gisborne to meet Poverty Bay.
South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury are tied on 21 points after Mid Canterbury beat North Otago 28-7 in Ashburton. The winner of next week’s clash between the neighbours should qualify for the Meads play-offs.
