
Central Regions Tour: 15th August to 24th August
Each year NZ Marist undertakes a Colts rugby tour with players selected from the 29 Marist affiliated clubs within New Zealand and invited players from Marist clubs overseas. Over the years they have had invited players from Australia, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Argentina.
This is a serious rugby tour of four quality games in nine days. This is intense rugby of a professional level and the squad members are expected to keep in good physical shape throughout the tour, manage any knocks and injuries immediately and advise team management of any concerns.
Punctuality is a key element to the success of the NZ International Sevens and Gordon Tietjens, the NZ Sevens Coach who was a member of the first NZ Marist Colts Team in 1974, he has assisted NZ Marist over the years in supporting the coaches and players on tour. Sir Gordon Tietjens will be involved in this year’s tour and part of the reunion of the first NZ Marist Colts team in 1974.
The 40th Annual NZ Marist Colts Tour see’s them visit Wellington, Hutt Valley, Buller and Tasman Districts. Each year a team is selected consisting of one player from each of the 29 Marist Clubs throughout NZ.
In the past 10 years this has been expanded to support the Pacific Countries and other members of the Marist network. These Countries will also have one representative from each of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga Marist plus one player from Brothers Rugby Club in Brisbane and one from Argentina Marist.
In the first NZ Marist Colts team selected 40 years ago was one Sir Gordon Tietjens who will be participating in the 40 year reunion this weekend and also assisting with the coaching of the NZ Marist Colts team who will be playing a combined MSP and Hutt OB Marist Colts team at the Hutt Rec at 1 30 pm on Saturday.
The champion club in Waikato for the past two seasons is Hamilton Marist and the champion club in Wellington this year was MSP Winning the Swindale Shield first round and Hutt OB Marist winning the Jubilee Cup and becoming the Champion Club of Wellington and as they also won the NZ Marist Spillane Cup pre season competition they are now the Champion NZ Marist Club of the 29 Marist Clubs throughout NZ.
