Pink Batts Heartland Championship 2015 Launches

Another rousing season of amateur provincial rugby is set to get underway on Saturday when the Pink Batts Heartland Championship 2015 launches.

Saturday’s six matches are just the start of a competition that will see a total of 54 played over the course of 10 weeks, culminating in the Meads Cup and Lochore Cup Finals on 24 and 25 October.

New Zealand Rugby General Manager Rugby Neil Sorensen said the Pink Batts Heartland Championship held an important place in the national game’s calendar.

“With a grassroots feel we are all familiar with, this competition, like the ITM Cup, offers something that no other country can match – a national, inter-provincial tournament that covers the depth and breadth of the country across both large urban to small, rural communities.

“These players, coaches, management teams and fans are a huge part of what traditional rugby is about. They go to work, come home, head off to train twice a week with their mates before travelling what can be hundreds of kilometres just to be at the game on Saturday – before starting all over again on Monday.

“It’s the passion and dedication that speaks volumes about our game. I love watching this sort of rugby,” he said.

Week One Preview
Meads Cup champions Mid Canterbury start their new campaign at home in Ashburton taking on neighbouring rivals South Canterbury, while Lochore Cup champions Wanganui head south to Levin to face Horowhenua Kapiti in their 2015 season opener.

In other Week One action, last year’s Meads Cup finalists Buller host King Country in Westport, neighbours East Coast and Poverty Bay square off at Whakarua Park in Ruatoria, North Otago take on the West Coast in Oamaru and Thames Valley and the Wairarapa Bush brush off their cobwebs in Paeroa.

The eight-week competition will be followed by semifinals on 17 October, with the Meads Cup and Lochore Cup champions decided on 24 and 25 October respectively.
