Loose forward Isei Lewaqai scored the only try for Buller and James Lash backed that with a conversion, three penalty goals and a dropped goal to steal the edge from South Canterbury.
Halfback Sekope Maea scored South Canterbury’s try while Jared Trevathan added the extras from his boot.
South Canterbury, who led going into the fourth round, now share second place, three points behind Buller with Poverty Bay, who beat Wairarapa Bush 23-10, and Horowhenua Kapiti, who beat West Coast 19-17, are all on 15 points.
